Review | The Midnight Star by Marie Lu

As soon as I finished The Rose Society, I immediately picked up this book. It was so good. I don’t think I’ll ever find a book like this that was written so beautifully.

I know I’ve said this a million times, but Marie Lu is an AMAZING, OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD, author.

I’m going to stop talking about how much I love Marie Lu and get on to the book review.

SPOILERS AHEAD

okay.

When Raffaele was able to capture Adelina, I was confused. Adelina was a QUEEN and she was super powerful. I mean, how could they do they so easily?

To say, I was really jealous of the relationship that Adelina and Violetta shared. They loved each other so much, throughout their lives.

I’m an only child, so….

That brings me to the next point. ADELINA GAVE UP HER LIFE FOR VIOLETTA????

like. WHAT

I  honestly, did not. I could not understand this.

I had spent half my time reading The Rose Society and The Midnight Star convincing myself that Adelina was a vain, scared girl. And yet she had sacrificed her soul for her sisters.

MIND BLOWN.

Even though I think it was great that she ended her life, I was really sad. She was such an amazing character to read about and she was so relatable. I really love her character.

So Violetta became queen. I was kind of skeptical about her becoming queen, but then I remembered her alignments and then realized. She’s perfect for the job.

She’s kind, has empathy and does what she believes is right.

I always thought that she was a pain in the butt, but now? I love her.

I love her.

Adelina, was amazing. She had so much will within her. She did what was right and knew what she deserved. I can not say how much I loved her character.

Magiano. Can I just say that he was my favorite character of all time. He was so much fun. I loved him. I love him. He is amazing. He followed Adelina’s constellation because he loved her? That is probably the sweetest thing ever. He has this amazing happy vibe and Magiano is the best. The best. I honestly love him so much.

Violetta and Sergio are so going to happen.

I loved this trilogy so much and I will definitely be reading Marie Lu’s Legend trilogy.

~

SPOILER ALERT

~

Guys. This book was phenomenal.

I loved this book.

I don’t know about you but Marie Lu is one of my favorite authors. She has been since I read The Young Elites in April. Her style of writing is amazing and I love how she twists the words to create this beautiful creation. Honestly, I liked this book even more than I loved the Young Elites. There were so many feeling and emotions. I coulnd’t stop reading the book.

Adelina was an amazing character to read about. Her personality was so fierce and strong. But because of her history, I wasn’t sure about what was going to happen to her. SHe scared me a little, but at the same time, I loved her for her flaws. Violetta was fine. In the beginning. She was so sweet and kind and everything that a sister could wish for, except that she was so…

ANNOYING. As the book progressed, Violetta began to question everything and I don’t think I really wanted her to be in the books. That feeling was ill felt since I hated that she left at the end. That feeling that Marie Lu wrote just killed me. I was so and so annoyed. I couldn’t understand Violetta. Did she really love her sister? Why did she always take away Adelina’s power?

Everyone was going to die and Adelina was no exception.

Th problem with Adelina was that she was so weak. Underneath her need to impress and be feared, she scared the crap out of everyone. That was what I hated. Usually, the character needs to be a villain for me to hate him/her, but this is why I loved Marie Lu’s writing so much. She could make me feel so many things that I didn’t want to feel, but did because of her writing.

I love Raffaelle. Even though he kicked Adelina out of the Dagger Society, I don’t think Adelina could have done anything without Raffaelle. Not to mention he’s hot and his personality is like.. DAMNNNN

I recommend this trilogy. SO much. It’s so much fun and the perspectives are really different than the usual novel. READ ITTT!!!

cheapest places to buy books

I am an avid book collector. I have so many books and many of them are from Indigo, but there are so many stores and websites that are a lot cheaper than actual bookstores.

ABEBOOKS

AbeBooks has a really large collection of books. You can choose the editions. Like first edition Jane Eyre or whatever. The books are also super cheap. You can order books that have been signed by the authors and the best thing is….

There’s FREE SHIPPING!!!

How awesome is that??

THRIFT BOOKS

Thrift Books has so many books that are really cheap. They are used, however, the condition they are in are changeable. Thrift Books also sells new books.

There are constant sales.

BARNES AND NOBLE

Barnes and Noble sells cheap and new books. The website is really clean and modern. I love buying from Barnes and Noble. It is a really good online bookstore.

BOOK DEPOSITORY

Book Depository is definitely one of my favorite places to online shop on this list. I don’t know why but I just like it a lot. There’s free shipping and it takes a long time to arrive since I live in America and they ship the books overseas. This next point can be a pro and a con. The covers are all the UK covers. So……

Some of the UK book covers are horrible.. 😦

AMAZON

Amazon has a TON of cheap books. You can buy them for your Kindle cause ebooks are super cheap and you can carry them anywhere as long as you have the app or device!!

INDIGO / CHAPTERS / COLES

Even though Indigo (the physical store) is pricey, the website is a lot cheaper. Indigo also has notebooks, home items, and bookmarks for sale so I would recommend checking it out.

THRIFT STORES

There are tons of thrift stores out there. People can donate books that are really cheap. I found books that were originally  $21 and I got them for $6. Going to your local thrift store is a really great idea. There are other things there like clothes, old furniture, books decorative items…..

GARAGE SALES

These places sell everything that people don’t want anymore. It’s a great place to check out even if there aren’t books there. You never know what you might find. there could be spare bookshelves, desks. All they need are some refurnishings.

AND THAT IS ALLLL

ANOTHER BOOK HAUL

Hello….

I have ANOTHER BOOK HAUL.

Yes. Another one.

I did receive 18 books earlier this month from Indigo and Book Depository (not including ebooks).

But I am a book maniac. Especially when it’s collecting. That, I LOOVE.

All these books are from value village which is my local thrift store. I lvoe value village, especially the books. Everything there is so cheap and ou can transform them into something iconic.

So anyways, let’s get on with the haul!!

The first book is City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. ($3.15)

I did not read this book yet. I always read the beginning and then I stopped because I didn’t want to read it. Or I had to return it. But now I actually have the book so I can’t escape….

My next book is Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas ($4.00)

I have already read this book, but I’d borrowed it from the library then. I officially bought my own copy. In hardcover. And it was so cheap!!

I then bought Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.

I have not yet read it, but I have read Rainbow’s Fangirl which I loved. I’m really excited to read it. I added the book to my summer reads list on Goodreads.

The last book is the summer i turned pretty by Jenny Han. I recently watched a non-spoiler review on it, and many people have recommended Jenny Han to me.

So I’m excited.

I would definietely reccommend buying books from thrift stores. there are so many options and many books are in the original edition. SO, go and buy. Cause they are cheap.

In a village without sound…

For as long as Fei can remember, no one in her village has been able to hear. Rocky terrain and frequent avalanches make it impossible to leave the village, so Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zip line that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom.

When villagers begin to lose their sight, deliveries from the zip line shrink. Many go hungry. Fei and all the people she loves are plunged into crisis, with nothing to look forward to but darkness and starvation.

One girl hears a call to action…

Until one night, Fei is awoken by a searing noise. Sound becomes her weapon.

She sets out to uncover what’s happened to her and to fight the dangers threatening her village. A handsome miner with a revolutionary spirit accompanies Fei on her quest, bringing with him new risks and the possibility of romance. They embark on a majestic journey from the peak of their jagged mountain village to the valley of Beiguo, where a startling truth will change their lives forever…

And unlocks a power that will save her people.

The Avery Shaw Experiment by Kelly Oram

When Avery Shaw’s heart is shattered by her life-long best friend, she chooses to deal with it the only way she knows how—scientifically.

The state science fair is coming up and Avery decides to use her broken heart as the topic of her experiment. She’s going to find the cure. By forcing herself to experience the seven stages of grief through a series of social tests, she believes she will be able to get over Aiden Kennedy and make herself ready to love again. But she can’t do this experiment alone, and her partner (ex-partner!) is the one who broke her heart.

Avery finds the solution to her troubles in the form of Aiden’s older brother Grayson. The gorgeous womanizer is about to be kicked off the school basketball team for failing physics. He’s in need of a good tutor and some serious extra credit. But when Avery recruits the lovable Grayson to be her “objective outside observer,” she gets a whole lot more than she bargained for because Grayson has a theory of his own: Avery doesn’t need to grieve. She needs to live. And if there’s one thing Grayson Kennedy is good at, it’s living life to the fullest.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Cath and Wren are identical twins, and until recently they did absolutely everything together. Now they’re off to university and Wren’s decided she doesn’t want to be one half of a pair any more – she wants to dance, meet boys, go to parties and let loose. It’s not so easy for Cath. She would rather bury herself in the fanfiction she writes where there’s romance far more intense than anything she’s experienced in real life.

Now Cath has to decide whether she’s ready to open her heart to new people and new experiences, and she’s realizing that there’s more to learn about love than she ever thought possible …

The books in the LUX series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Oynx (#2)

Onyx (Lux, #2)

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

Opal (#3)

Opal (Lux, #3)

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it.

Origin (#4)

Origin (Lux, #4)

Daemon will do anything to get Katy back.

After the successful but disastrous raid on Mount Weather, he’s facing the impossible. Katy is gone. Taken. Everything becomes about finding her. Taking out anyone who stands in his way? Done. Burning down the whole world to save her? Gladly. Exposing his alien race to the world? With pleasure.

All Katy can do is survive.

Surrounded by enemies, the only way she can come out of this is to adapt. After all, there are sides of Daedalus that don’t seem entirely crazy, but the group’s goals are frightening and the truths they speak even more disturbing. Who are the real bad guys? Daedalus? Mankind? Or the Luxen?

Together, they can face anything.

But the most dangerous foe has been there all along, and when the truths are exposed and the lies come crumbling down, which side will Daemon and Katy be standing on?

And will they even be together?

Opposition (#5)

Opposition (Lux, #5)

Katy knows the world changed the night the Luxen came.

She can’t believe Daemon welcomed his race or stood by as his kind threatened to obliterate every last human and hybrid on Earth. But the lines between good and bad have blurred, and love has become an emotion that could destroy her—could destroy them all.

Daemon will do anything to save those he loves, even if it means betrayal.

They must team with an unlikely enemy if there is any chance of surviving the invasion. But when it quickly becomes impossible to tell friend from foe, and the world is crumbling around them, they may lose everything— even what they cherish most—to ensure the survival of their friends…and mankind.

War has come to Earth. And no matter the outcome, the future will never be the same for those left standing.

Cinderella and the Colonel by K. M. Shea

Cinderella and the Colonel (Timeless Fairy Tales, #3)

Scratching out a living in a land recovering from war and a hostile takeover, Cinderella—an orphaned, destitute duchess—is desperate to save her lands and servants in spite of the terrible taxes placed upon her by the Erlauf queen, even if it means she must don servants’ clothes and work like a commoner.

Her sacrifices aren’t enough, and when a mountain of debt is levied against her, she is given one season to produce the funds. Cinderella realizes it is only a matter of time before she loses everything she has struggled to protect, and it seems that all is lost until she is befriended by the debonair Colonel Friedrich—a member of the Erlauf military and a citizen of the oppressing country that rules her homeland.

From helping her break into the royal library to saving her from a rogue mage, Friedrich draws her closer and challenges her mindset of the queen and the war.

Cinderella knows Friedrich is not all he appears to be, but can she trust him with her country and her heart?

CINDERELLA AND THE COLONEL is fairy tale retelling of love, sacrifice, adventure, and magic. It is filled with humor, deception, and clean romance, and it belongs to the top selling series, TIMELESS FAIRY TALES. The books in this series take place in the same world and can be read all together, or as individual, stand-alone books.

I have a review for this here

Lord of Pleasure by Erica Ridley

Lord of Pleasure (Rogues to Riches, #2)

In the Rogues to Riches historical romance series, Cinderella stories aren’t just for princesses… Sigh-worthy Regency rogues sweep strong-willed young ladies into a whirlwind romance with rollicking adventure.

Nondescript “good girl” Miss Camellia Grenville only ever opens her mouth when forced to sing at her family’s musicales. That is, until the night she infiltrates the ton’s most scandalous masquerade ball on behalf of her sister, and finds herself in the arms—and the bed—of the one man she’d sworn to hate.

Irresistibly arrogant and unapologetically sensuous, infamous rake Lord Wainwright always gets his way. When he accepts a wager to turn his rakish image respectable in just forty days, he never anticipates falling for an anonymous masked lover…or that discovering her identity would destroy them both.

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1)

Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Geekerella

Anything can happen once upon a con…

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

Can I just say, WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW.
I loved this book. I was a bit disappointed in the outccome, but I still love it.
5 stars.
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD
So this is going to be a fairly long review. I have so many points that I want to write about. I’m really excited to start.
The first thing I wanted to mention was the relationship that Cassian and Nesta had. It was so much like Feyre and Rhysand’s. Hate and then love. I absolutely adored it when Cassian said,
“Because I can’t stay away.”
like, HOLY COW.
I was literally singing, THE SHIP IS SAILING THE SHIP IS SAILING over and over. I was super excited for Nesta and Cassian.
Of course I would expect Nesta to be hostile, but I didn’t expect her to be this cold. She was so fiery and now as a high fae living in the house of Rhysand, I think she should be acting a bit more grateful. I mean, they savedd her butt!
BE THANKFUL.
Later on in the book, Nesta is worried.
YES YES YES YES YES
But of course, Mor jumped in and acted like a jealous ex. I always loved Morrigan, but she was getting in the way of their relationship. Mor, please know when to back off.
I don’t think that I can fully express how awesome Nesta is. I laughed so much when she just completely ignored Helion. He totally deserved it, after all the womanizing and manizing he’d done in the past.
The next thing I want to say is this. HELION WANTS A FOURSOME WITH CASSIAN, AZRIEL AND MOR??????
LIKE WHATTT???
Sarah J. Maas incorporated so many new sexual things like sexuality or just sex generally. It was quite, strange, but I got used to it. It was entertaining to see the three rejecting Helion. Again.
Though there was a lot of laughter, I also cried. Like a bucket full of tears.
When the Suriel died. I cried. He was probably one of my favorite characters in ACOTAR, ACOMAF and then,
he died.
Just like that.
Because of Ianthe.
I was so glad that the Weaver killed (or ate or whatever she did) Ianthe. She deserved everything that was given to her and more. HOW COULD YOU BETRAY HER YOU PROSTITUTE.
UGHHHH.
I found this thing online though. I really liked it so I just put it here.
Image result for the suriel dies
Let’s talk about my favorite parts of the book.
Image result for nesta disses helion
DUDE> AZRIEL IS BADASS AND COOL.
I honestly love him so much. I wish he was my boyfriend. 🙂
I did not know what to think when Elain killed Hybern. I just sat there and though. WTH. How and why and how and why and whyyyy.
I loved the image of this beautiful, delicate Elain that could open up to Lucien or Azriel (IDK)
But she just killed him. Just like that. The all powerful KING OF HYBERN  was killed by Elain.
Speech LESS
The next thing is something that EVERYONE has to have thought about.
And that is Rhys’ death.
DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN
When I saw these words
And Rhys was dead.
I started crying.
I cried so much. My pillow was stained with my tears.
I knew that Rhys had to come back to life. I assumed that he would be revived in the next book. But then, poof he was alive. And then POOF AMREN IS ALIVE.
And then I was like WHATTTTT
and I went back and reread everything that happened in that chapter.
I was disappointed that Tamlin wasn’t on my TO KILL list anymore.
He annoyed me. But I was thankful to him for giving that thingy that you could give. Soooo. I have mixed opinions about this guy. But I honestly hope that he finds love somehow. I think he deserves it for all he’s done for Feyre.
AND THAT WAS MY BOOK REVIEW

SO THAT WE CAN TALK ABOUT BOOKS.
